Drawing can be the most economical of art forms.  It can be the most direct, personal, and expressive medium. Drawing can be the documentation of the thought process, the outline for other media, or a finished product.

Below  is a gray-scale that approximates the value scale used by graded pencils.  Although the shades are computer generated, it is helpful in understanding the numbering system.  the B's are black and soft, the H's are hard and grayer.  The numbers indicate  the relative degree, by comparison, of hardness or blackness.

Pencils are sold as single pencils or boxed sets.  Two popular boxed sets are the hard range (technical drawing) and soft range (Sketching).

Supply List

  • For the Linear sections, a #2 or 2B pencil  is all that is needed.  For the tonal section the soft range box set plus a 3H and 5H is needed.
  • 11"x 14" All Purpose Sketchbook, Acid-free (ph neutral), 65 lb. to 80 lb. (a little heavier than typing paper, but not as thick as card stock). The paper should have a little tooth (texture), but should not be rough ( like sketchbooks sold in drugstores and grocery stores) or extremely smooth (like typing paper).
  • A kneader eraser (a soft pliable eraser, sometimes called a putty eraser).
  • A white plastic eraser
  • Manila envelope -- for photographs and ideas that will become source material for drawings.
